Yo confieso ante Dios Todopoderoso… (Spring 2024)
4 feet by 7 feet
Exploring my cultural dissonance and contingencies with my Puerto Rican identity, I display my experience with Puerto Rican Catholicism and its influences on personal ideas of self, morality, control and perfection. Inspired by painted religious panels and altars, the life-sized illustrations do no narrate a canonically biblical scene, but rather embody my felt contentions with religion at my most vulnerable state, physically and emotionally. The five figures are emblematic of my emotions towards religion: Devout, Rage, Desperate, Sympathy, and Curiosity. Serving as a confessional, I challenge my Americanization and my perceived failure to uphold the right Puerto Rican identity. I absolve myself from these imposter emotions and establish my own identity, free of expectations.
